Monthly Highlight: Manufacturing Facilities

Owners and operators of manufacturing facilities face a unique set of exposures stemming from the activities that are part of their daily operations, the premises on which the operations are performed, and handling/distributing the products being manufactured. Here are some of the common coverages required to properly insure a manufacturing facility:

General Liability/Site Pollution
Combined GL and Premises Pollution coverage, which provides coverage for both on-site and off-site clean-up, defense costs, and third party bodily injury and property damage claims.

Contractors Pollution Liability (CPL)
Provides coverage for pollution claims arising from an insured's covered and completed operations.

General Liability/Products Pollution
Provides liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage to third parties arising out of a manufactured product. The Products Pollution coverage part can be provided by either a stand alone policy or by endorsement to the CGL and is available on an occurrence or claims made basis.

Success Stories

• $8M Tank Contractor purchased General Liability, Contractors Pollution Liability, Professional, and Auto; the policy has a $1M/$2M limit. The insured also bought a $9M Excess policy.
  Total premium = $120,000.
• Chemical Blender with $2.75M in receipts purchased a $1M/$2M policy that includes General Liability, Products Pollution, and Contractors Pollution Liability. Program included many exposure specific endorsements tailored to provide the broadest possible coverage for this chemical risk.
  Total premium = $10,500.
• Oil & Gas Lease Operator with a 1,387 well exposure purchased a $5M/$5M Site Pollution policy ($250k deductible).
  Total premium = $554,700.
• $15M Tank Manufacturer purchased General Liability and Products Pollution with a $1M/$2M limit for $45,000. They also added a $4M Excess policy for $29,000.
• $2.1M Environmental Consultant bought a $2M/$2M limit policy featuring General Liability, Contractors Pollution Liability, and Professional. It also included: Blanket Additional Insured, Waiver of Subrogation and defense outside for CPL/E&O.
  Total premium = $11,515.
• We recently wrote an account for a crop farm with a storage tank and transportation exposure, as well as contracting exposure. One location, with $150k in receipts. The insured purchased a $1M/$1M policy with Agricultural Premises Pollution including Transportation Pollution Liability and Contractors Pollution Liability.
  Total premium = $2,515.
